GoD and the Holy Spirit. In this work he also refuted what BELLARMIN had offered on the fame fubject. The fame work was printed in Latin with the Author's Preface 1595. This work was published without his name. In the conclufion of this performance he promised, if God granted him lei fure and health, to collect together and publish a view of the arguments and reafons derived from the Scriptures in fupport of his own opinion on the fubject. But whether he executed his defign, or whether the work were loft in the plunder of his papers that happened 1598, is unknown.

A Defence of his Difputation on the seventh Chapter of the Epiftle to the Romans appeared 1595. It was intended as a reply to the ftrictures of N. N. a CALVINIST Minifter, communicated to him by NICHOLAS BERNAUDUS, an eminent phyfician. It was re-published 1618, 8vo. and in Dutch 1684, 8vo.

The piece of SOCINUS against ATHEISM, in which he undertook to refute the arguments of fome diftinguished perfon, and other M.S.S. were loft and deftroyed in the plunder of his effects. His writings that remained, after this havoc, were the Fragment of a first Catechism, which was not published before it appeared in the Bibliotheca Fratrum

real piety, ought to join themselves to those Churches in the fame countries who are called ARIANS OF EBIONITES. This performance was prepared for the prefs at the defire of a noble and learned perfon, who profeffed a great regard for SOCINUS. It was written in the year 1599; firft "published in Polish; and there was fubjoined to it an Appendix, concerning the defect of difcipline in the Church of the EVANGELICAL, and the reafons why that Church was daily decreasing, and that of those stiled ARIANS increafing. It was after the Author's death printed in Dutch and Latin at Franckar, with this title: The Duty of a Chriftian Man amidst the modern Controverfies about Religion: i.e. To what Affembly, amongst all those who differ in Religion, he ought to join himself. A little Book very useful at this Time: written by an anonymous Friend of Truth. Printed by the Permiffion of the Pope and of the Catholic King at Amfterdam, 1610. It was alfo printed at Racow, 1611, 8vo. The first Dutch edition being fuppreffed, it was tranflated from Latin into Dutch, and printed in the Netherlands, 1630, 4to. In this piece SoCINUS lays it down as a fundamental principle, that, to continue in the practice of no fin repugnant to the Gofpel doctrine is neceffary, in

order to attain to the kingdom of God. Having eftablished this point, he endeavours to fhew, in the second place, that the religious fyftem of the EVANGELIC Contained some doftrines and opinions which would scarcely permit thofe who embraced them to live free from the practice of all fin. In the third place, he points out fome things, allowed by their principles, which are contrary to the precepts of CHRIST. Fourthly, he aims to prove that they held many errors, which naturally obscured and obstructed the true way of Salvation. And, fifthly, he argues that there were many doctrinal mistakes in their scheme which, fuch is the fruitfulness of error, tended eafily to produce others' more important and fatal.

After the death of SOCINUS, BELTHAZAR MEIS NER, Doctor of Divinity, and Profeffor in the University of Wittemberg, animadverted upon this treatise, apprehending it was levelled against the LUTHERANS, to which perfuafion he belonged; as he did not know that, by the term EVANGELIC, as ufed in Lithuania and Poland, no others were meant than thofe who were elsewhere called CALVINISTS, by way of distinction from the LUTHERANS. This writer handled the fubject with great learning, judgment, and good temper. He was anfwered by JONAS SCHLICHTINGIUS, who il

fuftrated and defended the fentiments and reasonings of SOCINUS, in three volumes 12mo. published in the years 1635, 36, and

37*.

For the ufe of a certain German Nobleman, who came from Paris to Poland for the fake of inveftigating evangelical Truth, and of others, devoted to facred enquiries, at Racow, he drew up, a year before his death, a Commentary upon the first Epistle of JOHN, but never revised it. VALENTINUS SMALCIUS, an UNITARIAN Paftor at Racow, publifhed it in the year 1614, 8vo. with a dedication to the fenators of Argentoratum, now called Strafburg. The Editor obferves that from the polemical works of SOCINUS, many of which had been published, the penetration of his genius and his learning might be difcerned; and adds, that, from this performance, which was chiefly didactic, it might be feen how great a portion of his gifts God had beftowed on this mant.

In 1609 VALENTINUS SMALCIUS printed at Racow, in 4to, and inscribed with a prefatory Dedication to the University at Heidelberg, Theological Lectures,

In 1611 were printed in 8vo. various Tracts on the Church; in which are contained, 1.
