The expenditures for the same period by the State for the support of asylums and hospitals for the deaf, blind, insane, idiotic, epileptics, houses of refuge, reformatories, State Soldiers and Sailors' Home, Thomas Asylum, etc., were $5,409,796.07, and for buildings, repairs, plumbing and renewals, purchase of land, for services and expenses of Board of Charities, Commission in Lunacy, Pathological Institute and Bureau of Charitable Institutions, $1,338,337.96, making a total of $6,748,134.03.

The following is a schedule of the institutions in aid, or for the support of which payments have been made from the treasury, with the amounts paid for each:

PATIENTS IN HOSPITALS.

The following schedule shows the numbers of patients in the several hospitals at the close of the fiscal years ending September 30, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1900:

TAXATION.

The following table shows the assessed valuation of the real and personal property, the rate of taxation for State purposes, and the amount of the tax for each year from 1859 to 1900, both inclusive, 1859 being the year in which the State Board of Equalization was organized and began its labors:

The State tax rate for the present year is 1.96 mills, for the fol
