FIFTY-SEVENTH REGIMENT, I.V.I.

The Fifty-seventh Infantry, Illinois Volunteers, was organized at Chicago, Illinois, in December, 1861, by Col. Silas D. Baldwin, and mustered into United States service December 26, 1861. February 8, 1862 ordered to Cairo, Illinois, moved by steamer to Fort Donelson, and was engaged in the siege of that place February 13, 14, and 15. From thence moved to Pittsburgh Landing and was engaged in the battle of Shiloh April 6 and 7. Participated in the siege of Corinth May, 1862, and in the battle of Corinth October 3 and 4, 1862. December 18 moved to Lexington, Tennessee, marched from thence toward Trenton and to Henderson Station, on the Mobile & Ohio Railroad, and afterwards moved to Corinth, forming a part of its garrison. Marched from Corinth to Pulaski, Tenn., and thence to Chattanooga, and there joined Serman's army for the sea. Was in all the battles participated in by 4th Div., 16th A. C., from Chattanooga to Atlanta, Savannah, and the Carolinas. Was in the grand review at Washington. Mustered out July 7, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky, and arrived at Chicago July 9, 1865, for final payment and discharge.

FORTY-THIRD REGIMENT I. V. I.

The Forty-third was organized at Camp Butler, Ill., Sept. 1861. by Col. Julius Raith. Was at the battles. of Fort Donelson, Shiloh (losing 200 killed and wounded), and Siege of Corinth. In spring of 1863, 200 men were mounted. The regiment was moved to Memphis, and thence into Arkansas, where it was constantly on the track of guerrilla bands. The Forty-third participated in the repulse of Gen. Kirby Smith at Jenkin's Ferry. Received final pay and discharge at Camp Butler, III, Dec. 14, 1865.

THIRTY-THIRD REGIMENT I. V. I.

The Thirty-third Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Ill. September, 1861, by Col. Chas. E. Hovey. It participated in the following battles: Cache Alton Plant, Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, and sieges of Jackson and Vicksburg, captures of Fort Esperanga and Spanish Fort. It was almost constantly on the march, and was in many skirmishes.

SEVENTEENTH REGIMENT I. V. I.

The Seventeenth Infantry was mustered into U. S. Service in Peoria, Ill. May 24, 1861. Its first duty was in Missouri, pursuing Jeff Thompson and other like bands. It was in the following battles: Greenfield, Fort Henry and Fort Donaldson, Pittsburg Landing, advance and evacuation of Corinth, Iuka, Hatchie, capture of Holly Springs, siege of Vicksburg, and many smaller ones, and long marches too numerous to here mention.

The Eighty-third was organized at Monmouth, Ill. by Col. A. C. Harding, and mustered in, Aug. 21, 1862It was in the battles of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, and being on guard duty successfully resisted the attacks of bands of guerrillas many times. When Forrest and Wheeler with 8,000 men, attacked Fort Donelson in Feby, 1863. 9 companies of the 834, with Company C. 2d Ill. Light Artillery, defeated them the rebels suffering a loss of 800.
