1828-Returned to England.

1831-Became Earl of Dundonald on the death of his father.

1848-Appointed commander-in-chief of the North American and West India stations. 185-Made rear-admiral of England.

1857-April, completed his three years' tenure of command as admiral on the North American station.

1860-October 30, died in London, aged nearly 85. Lady Cochrane died some years before, leaving four sons; the oldest, Thomas, being Earl of Dundonald.

One of Lord Cochrane's exploits on the coast of Peru was the capture of the beautiful brig Macedonia, Captain Eliphalet Smith, owned by Messrs. I. & T. H. Perkins of Boston, and the seizure of $145,000, the amount paid for her cargo, I think, by Messrs. Arismendi & Abadia of Lima. Th vessel, which has an interesting history, I am to is still afloat as a man-of-war, bearing the name, I believe, of Arequipena. A claim for this seizure was made upon the Chilian government, and finally settled, and the amount paid to Mr. T. H. Perkins, several years after the dissolution of his house in January, 1838.
