PREFACE.

We send forth this our Fifth Volume with a grateful acknowledgment of the good hand of our God upon us, and resolving not to furl the banner of Protestantism, such as we have been permitted to unroll, while sufficient encouragement is afforded to us to hope that there are many willing to rally around it. We have, indeed, at times, found some difficulty in satisfying ourselves that such was still the case; but present appearances lead us to hope, that, though both open hostility and internal treachery join to assail the Protestantism of England, there is that among us which will yet bear down all opposition, and ensure an ultimate triumph.

We speak, of course, of the principle as held by a determined body of men, who are taught to render unto Cæsar the things that are Cæsar's, and unto God the things that are God's. We call upon such to lend their active aid in more widely circulating our humble but honest Periodical, which we shall endeavour to make as acceptable as we can to those who love the truth. To others, it cannot but be an offence.
