LIFE, CHARACTER AND PUBLIC SERVICE

SELWYN N. OWEN.

To the Honorable Judges of the Supreme Court of Ohio:

Your committee heretofore appointed to prepare and present to this court a memorial commemorative of the life, character and public service of the late Selwyn N. Owen, respectfully submit the following:

Selwyn N. Owen was born in Steuben county, New York, on the 5th day of July, 1836. He was the second of eight children of Horatio and Clarissa Owen. In the following year the family moved to the state of Ohio, remained a short time in the city of Columbus and then settled in Huron county. His early education was acquired in the public schools of that county. He afterwards took a course in the Norwalk Institute and subsequently at Antioch College.

Immediately after leaving college he entered upon the study of law in the office of Kennan & Stewart, then leading lawyers of Fremont, Ohio. He then entered the Cincinnati Law School and graduated there in the year 1862, and immediately
