"Can ye not discern the signs of the times ?”—Matt. xvi. 3.
FRANCIS BAISLER, 124, OXFORD STREET;
11, EXETER HALL.
M DCCC XLV.
Ar the close of an eventful year we cannot but offer up our congratulations to Him by whom our labours have been in any degree sustained and prospered.
The past year has been characterized by an increased boldness on behalf of those attacking, and increased determination on the part of those who defend our Institutions.
To those who have watched carefully and diligently the signs of the times, matters appear fast hastening to a crisis.
The advocates of truth and those of error seem all to have thrown off the torpor of the last century, and to be burnishing their armour for conflict. They are now marshalling under the banners of different leaders, assuming characteristic marks, and preparing for a struggle.
Rome is gathering fruit from the exertions of her Oxford allies. The seed of Tractarianism has produced a harvest of Popery.
We hear of secession after secession. We are not surprised. We have long expected it.
