JOURNAL OF THE SENATE.

Pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution and Laws of the State of Vermont, the Senate convened in the State House at Montpelier, on the first Wednesday, being the fourth of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-six.

At ten o'clock in the forenoon the Senate was called to order by his Honor, LYMAN G. HINCKLEY, the President. Prayer was offered by the Rev. J. C. HOUGHTON, of Burlington.

The roll of the Senate was called; whereupon it appeared that the following named Senators were present, and they were duly sworn by the President, and severally subscribed the oaths of office:

Mr. Cushman introduced the following resolution, which was read and adopted:

Resolved, That the Senate rules of 1874 be adopted as the rules of the Senate until others are adopted.

The President nominated and the Senate confirmed, the following named Senators as the committee on the part of the Senate, to canvass the votes for Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Treasurer, for the two years next ensuing :

Mr. Seymour introduced the following joint resolution, which was read and adopted on the part of the Senate:

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives: That the joint rules of the session of 1874 be the joint rules of this session until others are adopted.

Mr. Sowles introduced the following resolution, which was read and adopted:

Resolved, That the Secretary be and is hereby directed to inform the House of Representatives that a quorum of the Senate has assembled and are ready to proceed with the business of the session.

Mr. Guild introduced the following resolution, which was read and adopted:

Resolved, That the Secretary be directed to furnish each Senator and officer of the Senate with two daily newspapers, printed in the State, to be selected by the Senators and officers.

Mr. Walton introduced the following resolution, which was read and adopted:
